Roxanna is the new young Queen of Oreias, a kingdom being invaded by its much stronger neighbor, the Kalarian Empire. In a last-ditch effort to save her realm, she flees her castle to join her army. On the way, she is stopped by a mysterious outlaw. He is a good military leader, and can bring the downcast Achlysians, Oreias's old allies, into the war. But he is unwilling to fight. If only she could convince him to help her, so she could save her nation.

Vasilis is the leader of the Lystra Gang, a group of Achlysians who make a point of stealing from the Kalarians, after Achlys fell years ago. Vasilis feels Oreias is a lost cause, and he is too careless to lead the forces that can liberate either his nation, or Roxanna's. But he soon develops feelings for her. If only he could learn to pay better attention.

Roxanna likes to be in control, but she can't direct Oreias's fate. Vasilis wants to help, but he knows detail isn't his strong point. Will they learn to trust...

Lady Thespia is suspicious of Lord Damianos, the now captured spy of Emperor Nikolos. She thinks he is in contact with his emperor, though she can't prove it. But when Princess Celena decides to visit him, and the other Kalarian prisoners, in hopes of winning them over. Thespia feels she must join Celena to protect her from the influence of these crafty people. But Lord Damianos proves to a more enjoyable companion than Thespia expected. It can't be love, can it?

Lord Damianos is disappointed that he has been captured again, but he remains imprisoned in hopes of being useful to his emperor and friend, Nikolos. When he meets Lady Thespia, he thinks she is an overly proud Achlysian, who needs to be knocked down a few pegs. The Kalarian Empire has finally called for an end to hostilities between itself, and the Kingdoms of Oreias and Achlys. But there are suspicions that these overtures are not sincere. Princess Celena of Oreias hopes that peace will be achieved, but her family is more skeptical. At the peace talks, she once again comes face to face with Emperor Nikolos. She fears him, but she begins to think he may be more than just a ruthless tyrant. Is he really as evil as everyone makes him out to be?

Emperor Nikolos has called for an end to the war between his empire, and the two enemy kingdoms. But this call is a ruse. He actually intends to use the peace talks, as an excuse to get the Achlysian and Oreiasan royal families together in one place, so they are easier to capture. He wants to force an unconditional surrender, so the two kingdoms can be absorbed into his empire. But when he meets Celena again, suddenly, his path isn't so clearcut. He finds himself attracted to her...
